The Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at Mendel University in Brno (MENDELU) is an educational and research institution in the Czech Republic, dedicated to sustainable forest management, wood science, and the conservation of natural resources. Nestled in a region known for its natural beauty, the faculty offers a distinctive combination of tradition and innovation.
MENDELU, with approximately 8,700 students, is a specialised institution focused on the natural sciences, particularly forestry and agriculture. It manages 10,500 hectares of forestland and over 1,000 experimental forest plots of various levels, supporting research through extensive (meta)data sets.
Offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs, the faculty provides a comprehensive education in forestry, wood technology, landscape engineering, and environmental sciences. The curriculum emphasises that the faculty offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs, hands-on training, cutting-edge research, and strong international collaboration, equipping graduates for successful careers in forestry, industry, environmental protection, and academia.
Students benefit from access to state-of-the-art laboratories, extensive experimental forest areas, and close ties with the forestry and wood-processing sectors. This ensures they are well-prepared to tackle present and future challenges in sustainable development.
Research infrastructure includes advanced facilities for soil and plant/root analysis (e.g., microtomes, microscopes, CHNS analysers, ICP-OES), the unique Phytophthora Research Centre housing around 12,000 strains, and specialised genetic and microbiological laboratories (thermocyclers, electrophoresis, PCR, RT-PCR). The faculty also boasts modern spectral imaging and computational facilities, and the Josef Ressel Research Centre is dedicated to wood science.
EuAsiaN-ROOT is operated by EXCELLENTIA - Centre for Forest Ecosystem Research at FFWT MENDELU.
